Endosulfan Rehabilitation Kasargod year 2011

The excessive use of Endosulfan & similar deadly pesticides in tea & cashew plantations of various districts of Kerala has left thousands of poor villagers to suffer from various incurable ailments.

The affected areas are still dotted with tragedy struck families battling physical deformities, cancers, disorders of the central nervous system, diseases of the psychiatric problems, mental retardation, cerebral and genetical abnormalities, congenital abnormalities, infertility, epilepsy, liver cancer, blood cancer, miscarriages, hormonal imbalances, skin diseases and asthma etc. etc.

Many of the affected victims live in very poor living conditions with no access to basic amenities and are sometimes even-houseless and without access to any sources of income etc. These matters add to the pain of the victims and were needed to be mitigated.

The results of studies conducted by many environmental and social health organizations in the districts of Kasargod, Wayanad, Palakkad & Idukki of Kerala showed the situation was really alarming.  ‘Miserable’ is exactly how one could describe the lives of villagers in these areas.

In order to extend urgent help to severely affected victims,  SANTHWANAM initiated a rehabilitation and relief program that were completed in different 3 phases in 2006, 2007 & 2009. Our volunteers visited each homes of the victims and handed over financial support to them directly.
